Numeracy

My structured approach to maths tuition focuses on student’s conceptual understanding and procedural fluency providing a foundation for new learning, problem solving, reasoning and making conceptual connections.

I specialise in working with students who have  low confidence, maths anxiety and dyscalculia. For students with learning difficulties and/or anxiety, rebuilding  self-confidence with positive learning dynamics is a priority. It is important that student’s achievements (big or small) are celebrated so they will naturally begin to take more risks with less scaffolding. To avoid anxiety, I model and give prompts whenever they have difficulty until they choose to try a task without support.

My comprehensive maths programmes provide:

  • a clearly structured teaching framework for numeracy with colourful, multisensory shapes to make visual connections, use mathematical language, and actively engage in learning maths
  • pattern and number recognition
  • counting and writing numbers including place value
  • the four basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • fractions, decimals, column addition/subtraction, long division and multiplication
  • reasoning and problem solving games and activities

Numeracy Report and Learning Pathway

For students with general difficulties in mathematics:

I complete a Numicon Intervention Assessment to identify gaps in foundational number concepts. From this, I provide a Diagnostic Summary and a targeted learning plan that supports the student’s next steps in number knowledge, strategy development, and confidence.

For students presenting with indicators of Dyscalculia:

I complete a full Dyscalculia Assessment, including a detailed summary of findings and a specialised teaching plan. This plan focuses on strengthening core number sense, reducing cognitive load, and building personalised strategies that align with the student’s learning profile.

“I would really like to thank you for all the time and effort you have put into Jack and changing the way he thinks about Math.  Even his teacher can not believe the change in attitude this term, so that’s such a bonus for him.

My daughter  is progressing steadily with her Maths and literacy. She is more confident and is approaching her school work with more pride.  She looks forward to each fun hour session with Nicolle after School which as a Mother I’m so pleased.

I’d like to say a Big thank you Nicolle for all your passion and hard work tutoring my daughter. I feel the tutoring at this stage is a fantastic progressing point for her future.”

“Thank you for all your work with Noah. He absolutely LOVES his sessions with you, and it has had a real impact on his confidence with numeracy.”
